Spiritual Blindness

Spiritual Blindness

14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14 (New International Version) A few weeks ago I was having trouble seeing , I knew that I had cataracts in both eyes so I went to my eye doctor to have them checked. She made an appointment with a cataract surgeon for me. My vision continued to deteriorate to the point that the halo became a brown spot in my right eye. This surgeon looked my eye over very good and then told me that the more pressing need was that I had a torn retina. He had me escorted up to the retina specialist and he scheduled me for surgery the next day. As of the day after surgery he said that the eye was looking good and I should have full use of the eye in a few weeks. After the surgery a patch was placed over my eye and I could see nothing. The next day the patch was removed and about all I could see was light. If things go as planed the gas bubble that was placed in the eye to help cement the retina in place would dissipate and the eye fills up with the natural fluid. As with most of my life’s experiences I try to find a spiritual application. As I was blind with that patch on my eye we are born blind to the things of God When we are born we have but one desire; that our needs and wants are satisfied. We do not care what others are doing nor what they are going through only that they pay attention to us nor do we have any idea of who God is . We find in scripture that we are spiritually blinded. John 8:44 KJV Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do . He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 1 Peter 5:8 KJV Be sober , be vigilant ; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about , seeking whom he may devour : Revelation 12:9 KJV And the great dragon was cast out , that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Jesus came into the world break the power of Satan. He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested , that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3: 8 Even when we do hear of Jesus or are made aware of Him our eyes are not fully opened. 1 Corinthians 13:12 KJV For now we see through a glass, darkly ; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known . Jesus had to deal with this problem with His disciples for 3 years; with the disciples and on more than one occasion He said to them “o ye of little faith”. Their eyes were not yet fully open to see Jesus nor the things of God. Even to Simon he said that God had revealed to him who Christ was and then shortly thereafter Christ called him Satan. The more times that the disciples spent with Jesus the more the light began to dawn on them and their blindness was lifted. Even in the book of acts it tells us that they needed to study the Word of God. So it is with us as we are born in spiritual blindness God is still trying to give us spiritual light for in John 3:17 it says that He is not come to destroy the world but to save those who accept Him. John 3:16 tells us that Jesus has come for all men not just the chosen few but that as we respond to Jesus, we will be saved and our spiritual blindness will be removed. For us to come out of our spiritual blindness we need to be like the disciples and spend time in prayer and the study of God’s word. As we learn what the word of God says we also need to put into practice what God has revealed to us. As we do this God will remove our spiritual blindness so that we can become more like Christ. In our humanness we often start to compare ourselves to those around us, This will take our focus off of Christ and then Satan can start to deceive us again. The best advice that I have found in the scripture is that we need to be like Peter when he tried to walk on the water to Jesus. As he kept his eyes on Jesus he was able to walk on the water and when he looked away form Jesus he started to sink. He would have drowned if he had not cried out to Jesus to save him. Jesus wants us to keep our eye on Him and to respond to His will and guidance. May you see your spiritual blinders fall off and see the spiritual blessings God has for you.
